On behalf of everyone at the Saraland Fire Rescue Department, let me welcome you to the Saraland Fire Rescue Department’s webpage. I am honored to lead this department and grateful for the opportunity to serve the citizens and visitors of our community. The Saraland Fire Rescue Department is a Non-Transport ALS Department comprised of 53 paid personnel, including firefighters and Paramedics. Saraland Fire Rescue is responsible for providing professional and efficient fire suppression, emergency preparedness, emergency medical services, fire prevention, and public education to the City of Saraland, its residents, and visitors. Our goal is to provide the highest level of service in the most efficient manner possible; to constantly protect and preserve life and property against the elements of fire and disaster through adequate preparation, training, and education; and to respond to all emergencies in a safe yet swift manner with sufficient resources to address the situation. Our personnel provide professional and high-quality service, responding to the community’s needs with skill and compassion. Thank you for allowing us to be your guardians of safety for our city.

Administration Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Public Safety Complex located at 716 Saraland Blvd.

Emergency services are offered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Saraland Fire Rescue Department is comprised of the following Divisions:

Command
Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the department. Responsibilities include staff management, education, training, budget preparation, logistics, and planning. The Command staff coordinates and supervises the Divisions below. Members of the Command staff include the Chief, Deputy Chiefs and a Logistics Officer. The Command Staff respond to major calls when needed and are on call 24 hours a day.

Operations Division
Areas of responsibility include:

  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Fire Suppression
  • HazMat Response
  • Rescue – Extrication
  • Special Operations

The members of the Operations Division work 24 hours on duty, then 48 hours off duty. If you see a fire apparatus, you see operations personnel.

Public Education Division
This division is responsible for the promotion of Life Safety Education to children and the elderly. The Saraland Fire Rescue Department has a comprehensive approach to Life Safety Education. We have personnel dedicated to educating our public about not only fire safety, but fall prevention for the elderly, hurricane preparation, and home safety inspections.

We have a mobile “smokehouse” that we take directly to children in order to teach them what to do if they are ever in a fire. This unit also allows us to teach children how to dial 911, kitchen safety and severe weather awareness. This program, started in 2002, would not have been possible without a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This grant allowed us to purchase the education trailer and a tow vehicle along with all of the needed materials to provide this service to the public. For more information or to schedule a visit, contact Jeff Berg at jberg@saraland.gov.

Fire Inspection Division
The Fire Inspector oversees the Fire Inspection Division. Responsible for the enforcement of fire codes, ordinances and planning. Also assists local builders with plans review to ensure building are built to code. For more information or to schedule a visit contact Chief Austin Sealey at ssealey@saraland.gov.

FAQs

How do I get a burn permit?
Permits are issued at all fire stations during regular business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) The permits are issued for one day, and only one permit may be issued per resident per-month. Permits are only issued when burning is allowed by ADEM. There is no charge for residential burn permits. Burn permits are not issued during extremely dry or windy weather conditions. Contractors and those wishing to burn large amounts of debris should come to Fire Station 3 and speak with the on-duty Battalion Chief. We will conduct a site safety visit and once approved a commercial burn permit will be issued. The permit is $100 and good until all approved material is burned.
I am a school teacher or day care worker and would like the fire department to come out to my facility and teach my children fire safety. How can I do this?
The Saraland Fire Rescue Department has an Educational Division that can provide on site education for children as well as at risk groups such as senior citizens, and those with disabilities. In order to have us conduct an on-site class, please e-mail Jeff Ludlam at jludlam@saraland.org. Someone will take your request and have one of our life safety educators call you back to schedule the visit. Please give us 2 weeks notice when requesting educational visits.
If I request medical help in Saraland will I get charged?
The Saraland Fire Rescue Department never charges for Medical Services. These services are paid for through the efficient use of taxes collected by the city. You will incur a charge from the ambulance company that transports you to the hospital.
Why does a Fire Truck respond to someone that is sick or injured?
The Saraland Fire Rescue Department has Advanced Life Support capabilities on each unit. These companies will respond to calls for medical help in the place of a rescue truck when it is assigned to another call. Also, due to manpower requirements, we will send an engine company and rescue truck to calls for medical assistance that will require Advanced Medical Interventions, including traffic accidents, extrication of patient or transport by medical helicopter.
